The quality of the grapes and wines received from it depend on soil-ecological conditions in which the grapes are cultivated. It play role the temperature, light exposure, humidity, the steepness and the exposition of slopes, height above the level of the sea, the types of the ground, their structure, the level of the natural fertility, etc. Also it is important the affinity of the reservoirs, security of the place from winds and other factors. In everyone winemaking center and micro district there are one’s conditions, therefore have allocated them in the independent areas.
The first in the List of wine-making centers and micro districts of Moldova for the manufacture of wines with the name by origin is center Trifesti which territorially covers Cahul and Vulcanesti areals and is located in the south of Moldova.
The most known marks of wines with the name of the place of the origin of this center is "Trifesti" and " Rosu de Cahul ". " Rosu de Cahul " is the red, dry, sustained, blend wine made from the grapes Merlo (50 %), Bastardo Magaraci (30 %) and Caberne-Sovignion (20 %). The maintenance of alcohol is 11 %. " Rosu de Cahul " has received weight of medals on various international tasting competitions. 90 % from them are gold. In 1993 in France, in Bordeaux, - silver, twice in Bratislava - gold, in Turkey, etc.
Unfortunately, now " Rosu de Cahul " is not issued. The agro industrial combine on processing grapes and manufacture of wine from Cahul makes only three elite wines - Caberne-Sovignion, Merlo, Sovignion - under mark " Belle Terre ". In 1996 the factory has got the Italian equipment and is capable to work at the high qualitative level.
White sweet wine "Trifesti" have started to make in 1953 from the grapes Pino gri. The experts characterized it as a magnificent and noble wine. It has a dark-amber color, a taste full, harmonious, in the bouquet is strongly pronounced the aroma of newly baked rye bread. It is named the pride of the Moldavian winemaking. Later has appeared "Trifesti" that is a red dry vintage wine, which blend consisted from Caberne-Sovignion (80 %) and Merlo (20 %).
Today there is no either, or another. The privatization has made it business: vineyards have distributed. Now the grapes on them have not that quality (plantations are not processed properly, and it does not grow ripe) which is necessary for these wines. It is necessary 22-23 % sugar in berries for dessert "Trifesti". In the next year the young landings of Caberne and Merlo will enter in the stage of fructification. Having qualitative grapes, it will be possible to renew manufacture of these wines.
Three years ago has appeared " Negru de Prut " - the high-quality red dry wine developed from the grapes Pino fran (30 %), Merlo (30 %) and Codrin (40 %). Its fortress is 10-12 %. The wine possesses the specific for wine making in region of Cahul: an aroma and taste of the burnt tree. " Negru de Prut " has entered into the Catalogue of the best Moldavian wines of 2005. It is made by the joint-stock company " Wine manufacture "Prut". " Negru de Prut " while is on sale only in Moldova because the trading partners from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, though recognize high quality of this wine, but do not dare to import it because of high, in their opinion, the cost price in $1, stopping the choice on ordinary wines of this manufacturer.
